This marvel of South East Asia is dominated by a unique landscape.  The sheer breadth of the plains spanning across the Mekong Delta is enough to enchant even the most intrepid traveler. Those that have not experienced the beauty of Cambodia wil be captivated by the plains, enticed by the mountains and dazzled by its coastline.

To enjoy classic Cambodian architecture at its finest, start your journey in Phnom Penh. The first impression of the city is that it is exquisitely unusual with the shining peak of the Royal Palace, the bustling day markets and the spiritual essence of the city culminate into a surreal experience. This does not mean that the capital is free from the ordinary pace of metropolitan life, if you’re interested to find out how the economic progress of Cambodia is at present, the people and their spirit will be enough to depict this realm of reality, as thousands of motorbikes flock on the streets every day, the energy of the city continues to live on.

If you’re interested in immersing yourself in the remnants of the history of this land – a trip to the National Museum of Cambodia is the right place for you. The building holds fine samples of Khmer architecture, design and sculptures that have a million stories to tell. The astounding collection comprises of bronze structures and pottery which has been made with refined elegance.

Move on to the Royal Palace next and you will realize that this building is the definition of the city’s skyline, while the architecture may remind you of the scenes in Bangkok due to their similarity and likeness, it possesses its own identity. In the Chan Chaya Pavilion, performances of classical Cambodian dance light up the stage and provide entertainment for visitors. However, the part of the Royal Palace which stands out is the Throne Hall – present in a towering space which stands at 59 meters, this area is used for festive ceremonies, anniversaries and coronations.

If you’re already at the Royal Palace, then take a stroll and you’ll find yourself facing the Silver Pagoda, the structure of the Emerald Buddha is the highlight of this temple. The architecture of this locale is heavily influenced by the temples that can be witnessed in Bangkok. Yet the dozens of golden Buddha statues which align the pagoda are reflective of the artisanship which can be witnessed in the greater parts of Phnom Penh.
To escape the fast paced life of the city, travel to the Kampot Province – a countryside location, it is laced with limestone caves and long green trails which will bring you closer to nature. The two main national parks located in this area include the Kep National Park and the Bokor National Park, the latter of the two is located at a hill station. The fauna which is exclusive to this area includes the majestic Indian Elephant, the Malayan Sun Bear, small Asian mongoose and Pangolins. A luxury experience in Cambodia cannot be completed without a trip to the Southern Islands – this is the place to be if you wish to enjoy the beauty of the adjoining Gulf of Thailand in all its glory.

Cambodia is the untouched gem of Asia which may remind you of some of the destinations in South East Asia, yet it continues to hold onto its own unique identity. To taste all the flavours that this country has to offer, here is a perfect 5-day itinerary to help you plan your trip!
