A Truly Dramatic Country
The country has distinct geographical and climatic regions - Atacama in the North which is hot and dry, the central valleys and Santiago which is more Mediterranean, the lakes, volcano and rivers of the south and the ice, snow and cold of the most southernly Patagonia and Antartica.
The Atacama desert
The Atacama desert in the north is a dramatic landscape full of huge valleys, lagoons, salt lakes, geysers and colonial towns. The desert is also one of the best places in the world to go star gazing and is a leading astro-tourism destination.
The Wine Regions
For wine lovers the wine valley between the Andes and Coastal mountain ranges is an Aladdin’s cave of high calibre wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Syrah.
For those in search of more cosmopolitan options, Santiago is a vibrant and busy city. Modern and bright but also still full of colonial charm, Santiago has an excellent choice of hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes to offer.
The South
Further south Valparaiso is an enchanting and charming city, with winding cobbled streets and brightly painted houses. Recognised as the first UNESCO world heritage site, the city is home to artists and has a bohemian feel to it. The funicular railways taking visitors up and down the steep surrounding hillsides provide views over the city and surrounding mountains.
Patagonia
At the very south of Chile lies Patagonia and Torres Del Paine. The mountains, lakes, fjords, forests and glaciers of the region are wild and stunningly beautiful. With mountain treks, forest trails and kayaking this vast and exotic place can be truly experienced and savoured.
Experiences
For adventure seekers there are numerous activities across the country to be enjoyed; horse riding, trekking, kayaking, ski-ing to name but a few. If your interests are more laid back then the tantalising variety of restaurants, bars and cafes in the cities as well as the many museums and churches will keep you occupied. If you simply want to totally unwind and relax then the wealth of spas, luxury hotels, not to mention the beautiful scenery and natural thermal pools and hot springs will ensure this.
Chile is one of the safest destinations in South America and with it’s excellent infrastructure it’s a great country to start your South American adventure. Even if returning there will be another aspect to the intriguing country still to be experienced.
